Rev Michael's Ceremony
NOTE: This ceremony is the basis of all versions of Rev Michael's ceremonies. The wording is slightly changed to reflect which type of ceremony is presented, such as wedding, vow renewal or life partner. There are a few references to family and friends, and these are omitted if the couple does not have additional people in their wedding party. The religious version consists of the two prayers added, the non-religious version omits those prayers. The ceremony is non-denominational. Rev Michael prefers to not alter or change the basic wording of this ceremony, however, the couple is welcome to request to insert special passages, speak their own vows to each other and/or have special readings by family and friends. The ceremony is about 25 minutes in length.

Aloha! Welcome To Maui… We are all gathered here on this beautiful island of Maui, Date … to share and celebrate the union of, Groom and Bride, who come together here today to begin their new and exciting life together. Before we begin… I would like to invite everyone to take a moment to relax… Take a deep breath….. And behold the beauty that surrounds us… we are so blessed… Maui is a very special place, and this is a very special day… your “most” special day! Today… is not just the “First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life”… Today… is the “Very First Day” of your Marriage! I would like to begin with a romantic phrase in Hawaiian…
O Maui Ka Mokupuni O Na Moe'uhane… aia no ke aloha i ka lewa. Ka pili aloha ka po'ai o na komo he ola hou e ho'o ka'ana …
And This means… Oh Maui… Island Of Dreams… Love is in the air! Romance… Circle of rings… A brand new life to share!
And a… brand new life… is now what you are beginning today!
Opening Prayer (Optional - Only Used In Religious Ceremony)
Let us begin with our opening prayer… O gracious and ever-loving God… You have created us male and female in your image! Look mercifully upon these two people who come to you seeking your blessing. Lord… Assist them with your grace… that with true fidelity and steadfast love… they may honor and keep… the promises and vows they make here today. Amen!
Exchange of Leis
Groom and Bride, Here in Hawaii… we exchange flower leis… signifying our open hearts… and love for one another. These flowers are intertwined… and carefully bonded together… This is a reflection of your love and aloha for each other! You are now beginning to weave and combine your own lives together… just as the flowers of the lei are intertwined and joined. Now … the beautiful blossoms of the lei only last a few days. This is to remind you to take your marriage one day at a time, for life is both very precious and fragile. Each day that you are together… let your marriage and your lives be filled with the beauty and grace of these fragile flowers. Now… in Hawaii, we have a wonderful tradition… That when you present someone a lei… you also give them a kiss, one on each cheek!
Groom and Bride... The two of you have come here to start a new beginning in your lives… and to make a commitment that from this day forward you will walk together. May you look forward to the years ahead in giving, sharing… and getting to know each other… and may you open your hearts for this opportunity to love one another.
Marriage is a commitment to life… to the best that you can find and bring out of each other. It offers opportunity for sharing and growth… that no other human relationship can equal. It is a physical and emotional joining… promised for a lifetime.
Within the circle of your love… marriage will encompass all of life’s most important relationships. A wife and a husband are each other’s best friend… confidant… lover… teacher… and listener.
When you pledge to love and care for each other in marriage… you create a spirit that is unique to yourselves… a spirit which binds you closer than any spoken or written word can ever do... Marriage is a promise made in your two hearts… to be nurtured and fulfilled for the rest of your lifetime together.
And now… we are all here to give the two of you support… as you freely give yourselves to one another.
Groom and Bride, Are you ready to make your promises of marriage? If yes, say, “we are!” And… family and friends… are you ready to give your love and support for this marriage? If yes, please say, “we are!”
Groom, please look into Bride’s, eyes… And repeat after me…. I, Groom, take you, Bride, To be my wife... To join with you… And to share with you… All that is to come… To give and to receive… To speak and to listen… To inspire you… To be loyal and faithful… And to cherish you with my whole being… As long as we both shall live.
Bride, please look into Groom’s eyes… And repeat after me…. I, Bride, take you, Groom, To be my husband... To join with you… And to share with you… All that is to come… To give and to receive… To speak and to listen… To inspire you… To be loyal and faithful… And to cherish you with my whole being… As long as we both shall live.
Presentation of Rings
May I have the rings. Wedding rings are sacred circles, symbolizing eternal love… love that has no beginning and no end. They are made of precious metal… reminding us… what a treasure it is… to find our one true love! Wedding rings… are the outward and visible sign… of an inward and spiritual bond… which unites two loyal hearts… in a lifetime of love!
Groom, place Bride’s ring on her finger… Look into her eyes and repeat after me… I give you this ring… as a sign of my love… knowing that love… is precious and fragile… yet strong... a symbol of the vows… we have made here today... You are my beloved… and you are my very best friend. With this ring, I thee wed.
Bride, place Groom’s ring on his finger… Look into his eyes… and repeat after me… I give you this ring… as a sign of my love… knowing that love… is precious and fragile… yet strong... a symbol of the vows… we have made here today... You are my beloved… and you are my very best friend. With this ring, I thee wed.
Unity of Sand…. Blending
Bride and Groom, Please hold each of your sand vases close to your heart and impart your love into it… Because today… you are joining your separate lives together. These two containers of sand… symbolize your separate lives… family… and separate sets of friends. They represent all that you are right now… as an individual. They represent… your lives before today. As you pour your sand together… the individual sand will no longer exist… both will forever be joined together as one! Just as these grains of sand can never, ever be separated again… So will your marriage be!
If you add music to your package, 2nd song is presented here:

These readings below may hold special meaning for you.
Feel free to request one of these to be included into your ceremony.
At this time… I would like to recite some words about friendship. As you know… friendship is one of the most important ingredients of a marriage. Being each other’s best friend… is so important… to a lasting and loving marriage. I would like to have you look into each other’s eyes… and imagine these thoughts to each other… as I recite these words... ”I love you... not only for what you are… but for what I am with you… I love you not only… for what you… have made of yourself... but for what… you are making of me. I love you… for the part of me… that you bring out. I love you… for putting your hand… onto my heart… and choosing to see… all the light and radiant things… that dwell within me. You have done it without a touch... without a sign... You have done it by being yourself!”
Letter from Paul to the Corinthians
Through the years… many things have been written about love… and these are the most profound… so, for our closing prayer, I would like to recite Corinthians… Love is patient… Love is kind… It rejoices with the truth... It always protects… always trusts… always perseveres… Love never fails. Of faith, hope and love, the greatest of these… is… love. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
A Special Reading - Apache Indian Wedding Blessing
And now… a very special reading… Now you will feel no rain… for each of you will be shelter to the other… Now you will feel no cold… for each of you will be the warmth to each other… Now there is no loneliness… for each of you will be a companion to the other… You are two bodies… but there is one life before you… and one home. When the evening falls… you will look up and the other will be there! You will take each other’s hand… and you will turn together… to look at the road you have traveled… in order to reach this place… this hour of your happiness… This road stretches behind you… and your future road lies ahead! A long and winding road… whose every turning means discovery! New hopes… New laughter… A New Life… The adventure… has just… begun!!!
Our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come… Thy will be done… On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread… and forgive us our trespasses… as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power… and the Glory, forever! Amen!
Doves are a symbol…. Of purity and love. As Groom & Bride… Release these doves… It will forever be a symbol… Of their new life… And their new journey together… As husband… and wife!!!
Whisper your secret wish… to these butterflies... and they will carry your desire… over the warm trade winds of Maui… to the Great Island Spirit to be granted! Now that you have given… these sweet creatures to the Universe… your wishes will be fulfilled in return!
The Blending Of Two Families
The blending of two families is a special event. Much care and thought is needed for the days ahead… and especially deep love and understanding… as you journey together. The children in your family are important… not only as a source of pride and joy… but as the vessels that carry the future. All family members will benefit from this union… as in the end, we are all teachers “to” one another… and students “of” one another. Much to learn, and much to teach… as you journey down the road of life… in becoming one family!
